Why - The Unique Mic
The Unique Mic, is a program created by 12 dedicated Community Youth Leaders who recognized the need for a platform where adolescents and youth can voice their issues through the medium of art. This initiative stems from their observations and experiences growing up, where they saw many young individuals who wanted to express their concerns but lacked the means or platform to do so.
Our Community Youth Leaders observed several key issues:
– Lack of Expression: Many adolescents and youth wish to speak about their issues but do not have the opportunity or platform to do so.
– Gender Disparity in Participation: In outdoor activities, male participants are significantly more active than females, highlighting a need for more inclusive spaces.
– Limited Awareness of Issues: Adolescents and youth are often not fully aware of their own issues or the broader community issues affecting them.
-Exclusion from Discussions: Young people are frequently not allowed to discuss or share their opinions on many important issues, leading to their voices being unheard.
-Decline in Listening Spaces: Spaces like listening circles, where individuals can share and be heard, are becoming less common.
“The Unique Mic” addresses these challenges by creating a space where anyone can come and express their thoughts, and be heard by others. By leveraging the power of art, the program aims to foster leadership among youth, helping them to become informed, empowered, and proactive leaders who can drive positive change within their communities.
What We Do
The Unique Mic operates like an open mic platform where we invite youth to express societal issues affecting their homes, communities, states, and countries through various art forms. This program encourages youth and adolescents to see themselves as leaders, confidently presenting their issues through dance, singing, poetry, and storytelling.
Led by 12 youth from migrant workers’ families, “The Unique Mic” nurtures their leadership skills and empowers them to advocate for positive change in their communities.
Through “The Unique Mic,” participants discover their leadership potential and learn to articulate their concerns creatively. By engaging with the community through art, they foster dialogue and advocate for positive change. This innovative platform helps youth develop confidence, improve communication skills, and become proactive leaders, driving positive transformation in their communities.
